Information from Ohio&Erie Canalway regarding trail closures. There are some closures in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park as well as through Summit County you should be aware of :

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

  • March 24, 2024: The Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail is closed between Frazee House and Station Road Bridge Trailhead due to a sinkhole discovered in the canal near mile marker 15 creating unstable trail conditions. The closure will continue until able to be repaired. 
  • December 18 – May 3 – Station Road Bridge Trailhead closed weekdays: Cuyahoga Valley National Park will close approximately 1.5 miles of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail north of Station Road Bridge Trailhead in Brecksville December 18, 2023 – May 3, 2024, 5 am Mondays  – 6 pm Fridays. The trail will be open on weekends. The closure is necessary for public safety while a contractor completes riverbank stabilization. No detour is available.  

Summit Metro Parks / City of Akron 

  • February 15, 2024: Due to a warehouse fire, the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail will be closed between Beech Street and North Street until further notice.
  • March 25, 2024: The Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail will be closed along W. Bowery Street under the I-76 bridge for structural steel erection between Monday, March 25 at 7:00 a.m. and Thursday, March 28 at 4:00 p.m. Trail users should utilize the detour posted on Lake Shore Boulevard.
  • Ongoing: The Towpath Trail is detoured north of the Summit Lake Community Center while the City of Akron and Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition perform construction on I-76/77.
  • Ongoing: There will be an ongoing closure/detour of a half-mile section of the Towpath Trail (in an area managed by the City of Akron) from Spaghetti Warehouse to W. Bartges Street due to the demolition of the B.F. Goodrich Smokestacks. Detour from the north: Turn left down a path past Spaghetti Warehouse to S. Main Street. Turn right and continue on S. Main Street to W. Bartges Street and turn right. Continue down W. Bartges to where the Towpath Trail begins again on the south side of the street. The Towpath Trail may be reopened during off-working hours during evenings and weekends.
